What Is the Cynosure Elite+ Laser System?
The Cynosure Elite+ is a dual-wavelength laser platform manufactured by Cynosure, a Hologic company and one of the world's leading medical aesthetics technology companies. The Elite+ is the flagship laser hair removal system in the Cynosure portfolio, combining two distinct laser wavelengths in a single device to address the full spectrum of skin tones and hair types.
The first wavelength is the 755nm Alexandrite laser, which is highly absorbed by melanin and delivers fast, precise hair removal on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I through III). The second wavelength is the 1064nm Nd:YAG laser, which penetrates deeper into the dermis with reduced melanin absorption, making it the safest and most effective option for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV through VI).
The Cynosure Elite+ is FDA-cleared for laser hair removal, treatment of vascular lesions, and non-ablative skin rejuvenation. It is used by dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and medical spas across the United States and internationally. At Laser and Me, it is the only laser hair removal device we use.
A key differentiator of the Cynosure Elite+ is the integrated Skintel melanin reader, a patented technology that measures the melanin index of your skin in real time and automatically recommends the safest treatment parameters. This eliminates guesswork from the treatment setup and ensures that every session is calibrated specifically for your skin, not a generic protocol.
The Elite+ also features the Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD), a cryogen-based cooling system that sprays a fine mist of cooling agent onto the skin surface immediately before each laser pulse. This protects the epidermis from thermal damage and makes Cynosure laser hair removal virtually painless for most clients.
Cynosure laser technology is distinguished from IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices and lower-grade diode lasers by its true monochromatic laser output, higher energy density (fluence), and precise follicle targeting. The result is more consistent, longer-lasting hair removal with fewer sessions required.
Beyond hair removal, the Cynosure Elite+ is FDA-cleared for treatment of vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, and rosacea. The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is particularly effective for treating vascular lesions and rosacea on all skin types, while the 755nm Alexandrite is used for pigmented lesions and superficial vascular conditions on lighter skin tones.

How Cynosure Laser Treatment Works.
Skintel Melanin Reading
Before every Cynosure laser hair removal session, our practitioner uses the Skintel melanin reader to measure your skin's melanin index. This patented Cynosure technology automatically calculates the safest starting fluence and wavelength for your skin tone, eliminating guesswork and reducing the risk of adverse reactions.
Wavelength Selection and Settings
Based on your Skintel reading and hair characteristics, we select the appropriate Cynosure wavelength. Lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I-III) are treated with the 755nm Alexandrite laser. Darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV-VI) are treated with the 1064nm Nd:YAG laser. Cynosure laser settings including fluence, pulse duration, and spot size are adjusted for each treatment area.
DCD Cooling and Laser Delivery
The Cynosure Elite+ Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) sprays a cryogen mist onto the skin immediately before each laser pulse, cooling the epidermis to protect it from heat. The laser pulse then travels through the cooled skin surface and is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, converting to heat that disables the follicle's ability to regrow hair.
Progressive Hair Reduction
Cynosure laser hair removal targets follicles in the active growth phase (anagen). Because not all follicles are in anagen simultaneously, multiple sessions are required to treat the full hair population. Most clients achieve 80 to 95 percent permanent hair reduction after 6 to 8 Cynosure laser hair removal sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart.
Post-Treatment Care
After Cynosure laser treatment, the skin may appear mildly red or feel warm for a few hours. Treated hairs shed naturally over 1 to 3 weeks. We recommend avoiding sun exposure, hot showers, and active skincare for 48 hours post-treatment. SPF 50 daily is essential between sessions to protect the treated skin.
Long-Term Results
Cynosure laser hair removal delivers long-lasting permanent hair reduction. After completing a full course of treatment, most clients enjoy smooth, hair-free skin with minimal maintenance. Some clients choose an annual touch-up session to address any fine regrowth. The results are significantly more durable than waxing, threading, or IPL treatments.
Cynosure Laser Technology in Midtown Manhattan.
Laser and Me is one of a small number of medical spas in New York City that invests in the Cynosure Elite+ as its primary laser hair removal platform. Many studios in NYC use lower-cost diode lasers or IPL devices that produce less consistent results, particularly on diverse skin tones. The Cynosure Elite+ costs significantly more than these alternatives, but it delivers a level of precision, safety, and efficacy that no other device can match.
Our decision to use Cynosure laser technology is rooted in a commitment to clinical outcomes. Pavel Atamas, our licensed Nurse Practitioner, selected the Elite+ because it is the same system used by the dermatologists and plastic surgeons he trained alongside. It is not a consumer-grade device or a franchise system. It is a medical-grade laser that requires trained practitioners to operate safely and effectively.
The Cynosure Elite+ is also the most versatile laser hair removal system available. Its dual-wavelength design means we can treat any client who walks through our door, regardless of skin tone or hair type, with the same device and the same level of clinical confidence.
Cynosure Elite+ vs. Other Devices
Cynosure Laser Settings by Skin Type.
Cynosure Elite+ laser settings are individualized for each client based on the Skintel melanin reader output, hair characteristics, and treatment area. The following table summarizes the general parameter ranges used at Laser and Me for different Fitzpatrick skin types.
| Fitzpatrick | Skin Tone | Wavelength | Fluence | Pulse | Cooling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| I - II | Very light to light | 755nm Alexandrite | 12-20 J/cm2 | 3ms | DCD low |
| III | Light to medium | 755nm Alexandrite | 10-16 J/cm2 | 5ms | DCD medium |
| IV | Medium to olive | 1064nm Nd:YAG | 30-50 J/cm2 | 20ms | DCD high |
| V | Brown | 1064nm Nd:YAG | 25-40 J/cm2 | 30ms | DCD high |
| VI | Deep brown to black | 1064nm Nd:YAG | 20-35 J/cm2 | 40ms | DCD high |
Note: These are general reference ranges. Actual Cynosure Elite+ settings are determined by our licensed practitioners at each session based on your Skintel melanin reading, skin response, and treatment history.
