Laser hair removal at Laser and Me delivers outstanding results because we combine Cynosure Elite+ technology with personalized care. But even the best laser session can be compromised if you do not follow proper aftercare. Your skin needs specific attention in the hours, days, and weeks following each treatment to heal optimally, avoid complications, and maximize your long-term results.

Immediately After Treatment: The First 24 Hours

When you leave Laser and Me after your session, the treated area may appear slightly red and feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn. This is completely normal and indicates that the laser energy was effectively absorbed by the hair follicles.

Apply a cold compress, use a clean, cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a soft cloth for five to ten minutes at a time to soothe the treated area and reduce any swelling. Apply aloe vera or a gentle calming cream: a pure aloe vera gel or a fragrance-free, gentle moisturizer helps cool and hydrate the skin. Avoid anything with active ingredients, fragrances, or alcohol.

Avoid hot water, do not take hot showers, baths, saunas, or steam rooms for at least 24 hours. Hot water can increase inflammation in the treated area. Avoid tight clothing if you treated the bikini area, underarms, or legs. Do not touch or scratch the treated area, as it may feel slightly itchy as the skin heals.

Days 1 Through 7: The Recovery Week

During the first week after your laser session at Laser and Me, your skin is in active recovery mode. The follicles that were treated are beginning to shed the damaged hair, and the surrounding tissue is healing.

Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen daily, this is the single most important aftercare step. Laser-treated skin is significantly more sensitive to UV radiation, and sun exposure can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially on darker skin tones. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen to any treated areas that may be exposed to sunlight, and reapply every two hours when outdoors.

Avoid exfoliation, do not use scrubs, loofahs, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, retinol, or any exfoliating products on the treated area for at least five to seven days. Do not wax, pluck, or thread, only shaving is permitted between laser sessions. You can shave the treated area once any redness has fully resolved.

Weeks 2 Through 4: The Shedding Phase

Between one and three weeks after your session, you will notice the treated hairs beginning to shed. This is a normal and positive sign that the laser treatment was effective. The hairs may look like they are growing, but they are actually being pushed out of the follicle by the body's natural healing process. Do not pick or pull these hairs, allow them to shed naturally.

Continue applying SPF 50+ sunscreen daily on any treated areas that may be exposed to sunlight. Continue avoiding waxing, plucking, and threading. Gentle exfoliation with a soft washcloth can help accelerate the shedding process after the first week of recovery.

Long-Term Aftercare: Between Sessions

Between your laser sessions at Laser and Me, maintaining proper skin care is essential for maximizing your results. Continue daily SPF 50+ sunscreen use on treated areas. Keep the skin moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds throughout your entire treatment course. Shave as needed between sessions, this is the only hair removal method permitted between laser appointments. Avoid waxing, threading, and plucking at all times during your treatment course.

Skincare Products to Use and Avoid After Laser Treatment

Choosing the right skincare products after your laser session can significantly impact your healing and results. At Laser and Me, we recommend the following guidelines for the first week after each session.

Products to use: A gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to clean the treated area without stripping the skin barrier. Pure aloe vera gel or a calming moisturizer containing ingredients like centella asiatica, niacinamide, or ceramides to soothe and repair the skin. A broad-spectrum SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) for any treated areas exposed to sunlight. These physical sunscreens sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays rather than being absorbed, which is gentler on post-treatment skin.

Products to avoid for at least five to seven days: Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin, adapalene), which increase skin cell turnover and can cause excessive peeling and sensitivity on laser-treated skin. Alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic acid, lactic acid) and beta hydroxy acids (salicylic acid), which exfoliate the skin and can compromise the healing barrier. Benzoyl peroxide, which can cause irritation and dryness. Fragranced products, essential oils, and alcohol-based toners, which can cause contact dermatitis on sensitized skin. Self-tanning products, which contain DHA that reacts with skin proteins and can cause uneven pigmentation on treated areas.

If you are unsure whether a specific product is safe to use after your session, contact our team at Laser and Me before applying it to treated skin.

Managing Common Post-Treatment Reactions

Even with proper aftercare, some clients experience minor reactions after laser hair removal. Understanding what is normal and what requires attention helps you respond appropriately.

Mild redness and warmth: This is the most common post-treatment reaction and is completely normal. The treated area may look and feel like a mild sunburn for a few hours after your session. Apply a cold compress and a gentle calming cream to soothe the skin. This typically resolves within two to four hours.

Small bumps or follicular edema: Some clients notice small bumps around the hair follicles immediately after treatment. This is called follicular edema and is a sign that the laser energy was effectively absorbed by the follicles. It is completely normal and typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Do not pick or scratch these bumps.

Temporary darkening of the treated area: Some clients, particularly those with darker skin tones, may notice temporary darkening of the skin in the treated area. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and is more likely to occur if sun exposure guidelines are not followed. It typically fades over four to eight weeks with consistent SPF 50+ sunscreen use.

Persistent redness or blistering: If redness persists beyond 48 hours or if you notice blistering, contact Laser and Me immediately at (929) 755-2071. These reactions are uncommon but require prompt attention from our specialists.

Itching during the shedding phase: As treated hairs begin to shed one to three weeks after your session, you may experience mild itching in the treated area. This is normal. Apply a gentle moisturizer and avoid scratching. A cold compress can also provide relief.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I exercise after laser hair removal?

We recommend avoiding intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Sweat and heat can irritate the treated skin and increase the risk of folliculitis. Light walking is fine, but skip the gym for a day or two.

When can I shave after my session?

You can shave the treated area once any redness or sensitivity has fully resolved, typically 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Shaving is the only hair removal method permitted between sessions.

What should I do if I experience prolonged redness or blistering?

Mild redness that resolves within 24 to 48 hours is normal. If you experience prolonged redness, blistering, or significant discomfort beyond 48 hours, contact Laser and Me immediately at (929) 755-2071 so our specialists can assess your skin.
