Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent? The Honest Answer
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
The FDA classifies laser hair removal as achieving permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. This means a significant, long-term decrease in the number of hairs that regrow after a complete treatment course. Most clients at Laser and Me in Midtown Manhattan achieve 80 to 95% permanent reduction after 6 to 8 sessions with the Cynosure Elite+ system.
Why the FDA Says Permanent Reduction, Not Removal
Laser energy destroys hair follicles in the active growth phase. Follicles in resting or transitional phases survive the treatment and may eventually produce new hair. This is why multiple sessions are required. After a full course, most follicles are permanently destroyed, but a small percentage may remain dormant and reactivate years later, particularly in response to hormonal changes.
What Causes Hair to Come Back
Hormonal changes are the most common cause of regrowth after laser hair removal. Pregnancy, menopause, PCOS, thyroid conditions, and certain medications can stimulate dormant follicles. Vellus (fine, light) hairs that were not effectively targeted during treatment may also become terminal over time. Annual maintenance sessions address these cases.
How Long Do Results Last?
For most clients, results from a complete 6 to 8 session course last many years or permanently. The majority of destroyed follicles do not regenerate. Clients with hormonal conditions may need 1 to 2 maintenance sessions per year. Results are far superior to waxing, shaving, or threading in terms of permanence.
