If you have light to medium skin, the Alexandrite 755nm laser is widely considered the single most effective wavelength for laser hair removal. It is the gold standard for Fitzpatrick skin types I through III, which includes very fair, fair, and medium skin tones. At Laser and Me, we use the Cynosure Elite+ Alexandrite laser to deliver the fastest, most precise, and most clinically effective hair reduction available for lighter-skinned clients.

Why the Alexandrite 755nm Wavelength Is Superior for Light Skin

The Alexandrite laser operates at 755 nanometers, which sits in the near-infrared spectrum and is strongly absorbed by melanin, the pigment found in hair. For clients with lighter skin tones, the contrast between the melanin in the hair and the relatively low melanin in the surrounding skin is high. This contrast allows the Alexandrite laser to target the hair follicle with exceptional precision while leaving the surrounding skin essentially unaffected.

The result is faster energy delivery, more efficient follicle destruction, and a higher rate of permanent hair reduction per session compared to longer wavelengths like the Nd:YAG 1064nm. For Fitzpatrick I through III clients, the Alexandrite laser typically achieves 80 to 90 percent permanent hair reduction in five to six sessions, often with visible results appearing after just two to three treatments.

Speed and Coverage: Why Size Matters

One of the most practical advantages of the Alexandrite laser at Laser and Me is treatment speed. The Cynosure Elite+ Alexandrite laser features one of the largest spot sizes in the industry, which means we can treat large areas like the full back or full legs significantly faster than clinics using smaller devices. A full back treatment that might take 45 minutes with a smaller laser can be completed in 20 to 25 minutes with our Cynosure system.

This speed advantage is especially valuable for clients treating multiple body areas in a single appointment, which many of our Manhattan clients prefer for efficiency.

Treatment Areas Best Suited for Alexandrite

The Alexandrite 755nm laser is effective across virtually all body areas for eligible skin types. The most popular treatment areas at Laser and Me include the upper lip, chin, and jawline for facial hair; underarms for fast, lasting smoothness; bikini and Brazilian area; full legs and thighs; and stomach and lower abdomen.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

Because hair grows in cycles, with only 20 to 30 percent of follicles in the active growth phase at any given time, multiple sessions are required to treat all follicles. At Laser and Me, we recommend a minimum of five to six sessions spaced approximately four to six weeks apart for optimal results.

Most clients with Fitzpatrick I through III skin types see 80 to 90 percent permanent hair reduction after completing their full treatment course. The Alexandrite laser's high melanin absorption efficiency means that each session is maximally productive, and many clients notice significant hair reduction after just two to three sessions.

Comparing Alexandrite to Diode and Nd:YAG Lasers

When researching laser hair removal in New York City, you will encounter clinics using three main types of lasers: Alexandrite, diode, and Nd:YAG. Understanding the differences helps you make an informed choice.

The Alexandrite 755nm laser is the fastest and most efficient option for Fitzpatrick I through III skin types. Its strong melanin absorption means each pulse delivers maximum energy to the hair follicle, resulting in higher rates of permanent reduction per session. The large spot size of the Cynosure Elite+ Alexandrite system means treatment sessions are significantly faster than with smaller devices.

Diode lasers, typically operating at 800 to 810nm, are a middle-ground option. They can treat a broader range of skin types than Alexandrite alone but are generally less effective for lighter skin because the wavelength is not as strongly absorbed by melanin. Many budget clinics use diode lasers because they are less expensive to purchase, but the tradeoff is often more sessions needed for comparable results.

Nd:YAG 1064nm lasers are the gold standard for darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV through VI) because their longer wavelength bypasses surface melanin and targets the hair follicle more safely. For lighter skin types, however, the Nd:YAG is less efficient because the longer wavelength is not as strongly absorbed by the melanin in the hair.

At Laser and Me, our Cynosure Elite+ system includes both Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths. This means we always use the optimal wavelength for each individual client, and we can switch between wavelengths in a single session if needed for clients with mixed skin tone areas.

What to Expect at Your First Alexandrite Laser Session at Laser and Me

Your first laser hair removal session at Laser and Me begins with a free consultation where our certified specialist assesses your Fitzpatrick skin type, hair color, density, and the treatment areas you want to address. This assessment determines whether Alexandrite, Nd:YAG, or a combination is right for you.

On the day of your session, you should arrive with the treatment area freshly shaved (two to three days before, not the day of), clean skin with no lotions, deodorant, or self-tanning products, and comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area.

During the session, our specialist will apply the Cynosure Elite+ handpiece to your skin. The integrated cooling system will chill the skin surface before each pulse to maximize comfort. You will feel a quick snap or warm sensation with each pulse, which most clients describe as significantly less uncomfortable than waxing.

After the session, the treated area may appear slightly red and feel warm for a few hours. This is completely normal. You can return to work and normal activities immediately, though we recommend avoiding hot showers, exercise, and direct sun exposure for 24 hours. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to any treated areas that may be exposed to sunlight.

Most clients with Fitzpatrick I through III skin types notice visible hair reduction after their second or third session, with dramatic results by session four or five.

Alexandrite Laser Safety: What You Need to Know

The Alexandrite 755nm laser has an excellent safety record for Fitzpatrick I through III skin types when used by trained specialists with properly calibrated equipment. At Laser and Me, our certified laser specialists undergo extensive training on the Cynosure Elite+ system and follow strict protocols to ensure every treatment is safe.

The most common side effects of Alexandrite laser treatment are temporary redness and mild swelling in the treated area, which typically resolve within a few hours. Less commonly, some clients experience temporary darkening or lightening of the skin in the treated area, which usually resolves within a few weeks. Blistering and scarring are extremely rare when the treatment is performed correctly on appropriate skin types.

The key safety consideration for Alexandrite laser is skin type. This wavelength is not appropriate for Fitzpatrick IV through VI skin types because the strong melanin absorption can cause burns or hyperpigmentation on darker skin. At Laser and Me, we always assess your skin type before treatment and will recommend Nd:YAG if your skin tone requires it.

Sun exposure is the most important safety factor to manage. Tanned skin has elevated surface melanin, which increases the risk of burns and pigmentation changes. We require clients to avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks before each session and to use SPF 50+ sunscreen consistently throughout their treatment course.
