Facial laser hair removal in NYC uses the Cynosure Elite+ dual-wavelength system to permanently reduce upper lip, chin, sideburn, cheek, and full-face hair. Most patients need 8-10 sessions spaced 4-5 weeks apart and achieve 80-95% permanent reduction. At Laser and Me in Midtown Manhattan, upper lip sessions start at $50 and full-face packages at $1,000 for 6 sessions. NP-supervised protocols with Skintel melanin reading make treatment safe across all Fitzpatrick skin types I-VI.

Areas We Treat on the Face

Upper lip ("the moustache"): The most-requested facial laser hair removal treatment for women in NYC. Sessions take 8-10 minutes and treat the area between the nose and lip line. Most patients achieve 80-95% reduction after a full course, with periodic maintenance for hormonal regrowth. NYC pricing: $50 per session, $250 for a 6-session package.

Chin: Often treated alongside the upper lip. Chin hair is frequently coarse and isolated, making it particularly responsive to laser. Sessions are short and well-tolerated. NYC pricing: $75 per session, $375 for a 6-session package.

Sideburns: The hair between the temple and the jawline. Often treated with the upper lip and chin as a "lower face" combination package. NYC pricing: $75 per session.

Cheeks: Less commonly requested but valuable for patients with sun-induced peach fuzz or coarse cheek hair from hormonal causes. Sessions take 12-15 minutes.

Full face: A combined treatment covering the upper lip, chin, sideburns, cheeks, and (where applicable) the forehead hairline. Most cost-effective approach for patients who want comprehensive facial treatment. NYC pricing: $200 per session, $1,000 for a 6-session package.

Neck: Some women experience hair growth on the neck and jawline due to PCOS or perimenopause. Treated as part of a combined "lower face + neck" plan.

Why Women Develop Facial Hair

Genetics and ethnicity: Mediterranean, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American, and East Asian women are more likely to develop visible facial hair due to genetic factors. This is normal and not a medical condition.

Hormonal shifts during life stages: Perimenopause and postmenopause shift the estrogen-androgen balance, often producing new chin and jawline hair after age 45.

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome): The most common medical cause of female facial hair. Roughly 5-10% of women have PCOS, and many experience facial hirsutism as the most visible symptom.

Hyperandrogenism from other causes: Thyroid disorders, adrenal conditions, or certain medications (testosterone, anabolic steroids, some seizure medications) can elevate androgen levels.

Pregnancy: Hormonal surges during pregnancy can stimulate new facial hair growth. Most postpartum patients see partial natural reversal within 6-12 months.

Laser hair removal effectively addresses the cosmetic concern across all these causes. For PCOS specifically, we recommend coordinated care: laser for cosmetic management, and an endocrinologist for the underlying hormonal cause.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Treatment Area | Sessions | Time per Session Upper lip | 8-10 | 8-10 minutes Chin | 8-10 | 10 minutes Sideburns | 8-10 | 10-15 minutes Cheeks | 8-10 | 12-15 minutes Full face | 8-10 | 25 minutes Patients with PCOS or strong hormonal contribution may need 10-12 sessions initially and 3-4 maintenance sessions per year.

Cynosure Elite+ on Facial Hair: Why the Device Matters

Facial skin is thinner than body skin, and treatment must be more conservative to prevent burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). The Cynosure Elite+ system at Laser and Me handles facial treatment with three engineering decisions that make it the safest device for this area:

Dual-wavelength precision: The 755 nm Alexandrite for lighter skin, the 1064 nm Nd:YAG for darker skin and coarser hair. Same handpiece, optimized per session and per area.

Skintel melanin reading at every session: Facial skin tone varies seasonally (sun exposure on the face is greater than on covered body areas), and Skintel adjusts fluence accordingly.

SmartCool cryogen cooling: The upper lip and chin are sensitive -- the integrated cooling makes treatment tolerable without aggressive numbing.

These features matter most for darker skin (Fitzpatrick IV-VI) treatment. The Cynosure Elite+ is FDA-cleared for safe permanent reduction across all six Fitzpatrick types when used with Skintel-guided protocols.

What to Expect at Your Facial Session

Before treatment: Stop retinoids and AHAs 3-5 days before. No sun exposure or tanning beds for 2 weeks. Shave the treatment area 12-24 hours before -- do not wax, pluck, or thread for 4 weeks before. Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. Apply topical numbing cream 45 minutes before if requested (often used for upper lip).

During treatment: Skintel reading on the treatment area, protective eyewear, sensation of mild snapping warmth with SmartCool cooling. Most patients rate facial sessions 4-6 out of 10 -- the upper lip is the most sensitive. Total time: 10-25 minutes.

Immediately after: Mild redness for 1-4 hours, like a light sunburn. Possible swelling for 24 hours, particularly on the upper lip. Apply cool compress if needed. Daily SPF 50+ starts the same day.

Aftercare for Facial Laser Hair Removal

First 24 hours: No hot showers, sauna, or intense exercise. Skip makeup if possible. Apply fragrance-free moisturizer and SPF 50+.

First week: Daily SPF 50+ (non-negotiable -- facial skin is highly photosensitive after laser). No retinoids, AHAs, or chemical exfoliants. Avoid waxing, plucking, threading, or sugaring permanently -- these remove the follicle the laser needs to target at your next session.

Long-term: Daily SPF 30+ minimum, year-round. Shaving between sessions is allowed; other hair-removal methods are not.

Laser vs. Other Facial Hair Removal Methods

vs. Threading: Threading is fast, inexpensive, and pulls hair from the root -- but the follicle is intact and regrows in 4-6 weeks for life. A weekly NYC threading appointment over 30 years costs $15,000+ and requires permanent maintenance. Laser is one-time cost with maintenance.

vs. Waxing: Same dynamic as threading. Effective short-term removal; follicle stays intact and regrows for life. Waxing also frequently causes facial PIH on darker skin tones.

vs. Electrolysis: Electrolysis works on white, gray, blond, and red hair where laser doesn't. Slower (one follicle at a time, 8-25 sessions per area). Often combined with laser -- laser for the bulk, electrolysis for any remaining light hairs after a laser course.

vs. Depilatory creams: Surface-level, temporary, and frequently irritate facial skin. No effect on the follicle.

vs. Topical eflornithine (Vaniqa): A prescription topical that slows facial hair growth. Useful as a complement to laser, particularly for PCOS patients. Does not permanently reduce hair.

Facial Laser Hair Removal for Darker Skin Tones (Fitzpatrick IV-VI)

The face is one of the highest PIH-risk areas for darker skin tones because facial skin is thin, has high melanin density, and is constantly UV-exposed. Our protocols are specifically conservative for Fitzpatrick IV-VI facial treatment: 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength exclusively, conservative fluence with Skintel-guided settings, test patch on first session followed by 24-hour observation, extended intervals (5-6 weeks between sessions) instead of 4, and pre-treatment topical regimen (azelaic acid, kojic acid) for high-risk patients.

If you've been told elsewhere that facial laser isn't safe for your skin tone, ask us about a free Fitzpatrick consultation.

Special Considerations: PCOS, Perimenopause, and Hormonal Hair

Patients with hormonal contribution to facial hair growth see excellent results from laser but need adjusted expectations: more sessions initially (10-12 versus 8-10), more frequent maintenance (3-4 per year versus 2), coordinated care with an endocrinologist or primary care physician to address the underlying hormonal cause, and combination with topical eflornithine for stubborn cases. Many of our PCOS patients achieve a dramatic improvement in facial hair appearance, even though complete cessation requires ongoing maintenance.
